Rep. Deanne Mazzochi Co-Sponsors Legislation that Opposes a Vehicle Mileage Tax in Illinois

State Representative Deanne Mazzochi (R-Elmhurst) has been in office for less than two months, but she is already standing up to Democrats who believe the State should institute a per-mile driving tax for motorists.

“I chose to support this legislation as a co-sponsor because it is a tax that hits working and rural families hardest. People already pay taxes for their driving each time they hit the gas pump. Why would we double-tax people? Mazzochi reiterated that “rather than seeking ways to reduce spending and make government more efficient, we have Democrats always looking for the next tax. Perhaps instead we should stop incentivizing state officials who travel with needless entourages and demand mileage reimbursements.”

Mazzochi also observed that implementing the tax would be a bureaucratic nightmare. “Illinois has bigger priorities than hiring an army of mileage monitors to snoop on your driving habits.” Mazzochi also explained that the proposal “discourages people from purchasing fuel-efficient cars. I don’t want to punish people who made environmentally friendly car choices,” Mazzochi emphasized.

HR 766 was filed in July, and is co-sponsored by more than half of the House Republican Caucus.

House Republicans are not the only ones worried about the possibility of a mileage tax. Members of the DuPage County Board recently voted to put a referendum question before voters in the November election this year, asking: “Shall DuPage County oppose the creation of a statewide Vehicle Mileage Tax (VMT) which would tax DuPage County citizens based upon the number of miles driven annually?”

Further complicating matters is how to measure the mileage; Mazzochi noted that one method Democrats floated would “require each car to have a tracking device. The feedback I have received is that it’s an incredible invasion of personal privacy with creepy Big Brother overtones.”
